Please forgive me, I have a couple more Better Homes and Gardens articles I want to touch base on.
During the Summer time I have had clients ask about dry brittle course hair and what to do about it. This article explained it more in detail. It stated that Summer elements zap moisture from hair, leaving you with barbie like locks =) " Chlorine and salt water life the cuticle, seep in and dry tresses. The sun also weakens hair- particularly gray hair, which doesn't have the protective benefits of melanin, or color.
The FIX!!!
Treat and Hydrate. Apply a deep conditioner to damp hair, then wrap with plastic wrap so that the body heat will help the ingredients penetrate. they recommended Paul Mitchell After Sun Replenishing Masque or a hair oil. Coconut oil, wont leave a greasy residue and should be applies from midstand to ends before blow drying. or you can add a few drops before shampooing. It was interesting to read that most people would choose a shampoo or conditioner with keratin thinking it would strengthen hair, but over time the proteins build up and harden making the hair strands feel brittle. Protein based products should be saved for occasional use and a moisturizing conditioner with hydrating oils for daily use.
