Body Language

We had a fantastic guest speaker today who taught us about body language. I found it very interesting to learn that body language is 56% of our communication. Also, body language is controlled by the subconscious. My favorite thing that we learned is that it's easy to change your mood just by consciously changing your body language. Because your stance changes, it sends a signal to your brain to rewire and send a positive message instead of a negative one. It was awesome!

Hair extensions

The other day we did some research on hair extensions durring class.  I did some further research at home and found this website, hairextesionsgeek.com.  I like it because it has reviews on the top hair extesions brands available.  It also has a lot of information on hair extensions from key words to look for when buying to how to care for them.  This is a website I would send my clients to if they wanted to do their own research and it's a site I will use to keep myself up-to-date with on…

practical

I passed! I took my practical test yesterday and passed!! It was very hard and I was so scared. And taking the test was a joke. I cut my finger open and thought it was the end of  test. I though for sure I failed. But I guess I did a good job on the rest  of the test. I was so excited when I got  done, I pretty much just partied the rest of the day. I'm just one step closer to graduating!

Product Spotlight - Dove

Dove Nourishing Oil Care Detangler is the newest product on my shelf. I have a lot of really fine, really long hair. Being that way makes it tangle really easily. I have tried a lot of different detangling and smoothing sprays and serums. So far, I like the Dove Detangler the best.

I love that the Dove spray is weightless, so my hair doesn't feel heavy or weighed down when I spray it on. It doesn't leave it feeling greasy or oily when it dries. The smell is not my most favorite out of…

Lighter for Spring

I love the springtime! It's getting lighter and brighter and warmer! With the seasons changing, it's time to bring hair colors from dark and dull to light and luxurious! I love how easy it is to add just a few highlights and brighten up any hair color. I was able to add a strip weave to one of my clients today. Her hair was a pretty medium brown and the highlights brightened up her whole face. I'm so excited to be able to offer this to clients in the future!

Perming and relaxing

So today in class we talked about the process of how to do a relaxer, something that I think is the most important think before doing a relaxer is a test strand. We also talked about perming it is also really important to do test strands on people before perming cuz we don't want to leave our clients with no hair.

Spring Cleaning

When people say "spring cleaning" I usually think of dusting, scrubbing, and lots of hard work. In the case of hair, spring cleaning is a good habit to keep up. Getting a scalp treatment, or "spring cleaning" for your hair, will help to clean the scalp, add moisture, and relax the person. It includes a very relaxing scalp massage. I was able to give my sister in law a scalp treatment today. I won't lie, I was jealous. I can't wait until it's my turn to get one!

Real Men get Mani-Pedis

This past week and a half was FULL of manicure and pedicure clients for me. Surprisingly, half of them were men! Out of the six mani-pedis I gave to clients this week, three were men! I was so excited to clean up their nails and skin, and to help them to relax. I firmly believe that there is no man on the planet that should be above getting a manicure or a pedicure every now and then. It's so relaxing and makes your hands and feet feel wonderful! To any men out there reading this - your…

Lifting with Color

I've had this urge to lighten my hair lately. I think it's the seasons changing that are changing my mind about the darker color I've had.

I'm all for changing my hair color, except I'm reluctant to use bleach. Because of the persulphates in bleach, it is considered one of the most damaging things that can be put onto anyones hair. I've tried lightening with bleach in the past and I was not pleased with the uneven results, excessive processing, color fixes that didn't work how I…

One Day Off

For the past few weeks I've been coming to school all four days (plus Saturdays) that it is open. I am going to be honest, it's been exhausting. This morning I woke up around 6:00am, just like a normal school day, and almost started getting ready for school. Then I realized that I didn't have a sitter and wasn't scheduled in the books...it was such a strange feeling. Don't get me wrong, it was nice to have a day off and absolutely wonderful to spend that day with my sweet children. I still…

This is why!

This past Saturday I was given a client first thing in the morning.  She brought a picture of how she wanted her hair cut with her and so it began.  I was instructed by my teacher to wash her and cut a square one layer to start and then to come get her.  That was done pretty quick and I was excited to move onto the next part of the cut.  Since I am still pretty new on the floor, my instructor wanted me to watch how the cutting was done this time.…

Filling Up the Books

I always love coming to school on floor days. I love it because I'm always so busy. Typically, I have one client given to me from the front desk and the remainder of my day are clients who have requested me to take care of them. It's so exciting! Today was an exception to my recent streak of fully booked days. I only had two clients on the books all day...so strange. So, with the help of social media, I was able to offer free haircuts (thanks, Ramona!) and went from 2 clients to 5 in a…

Ear Piercing

I had the opportunity to practice ear piercing on a client tonight. It was exciting for me because it was my first time piercing on an actual person. It had a little more meaning to me because it was my youngest sister in law, and she was getting her ears pierced as a reward for accomplishing a pretty large task at home. I'm glad I can be a great source of rewards for people when they need to relax or feel brand new. I LOVE my "job"

Just Show Up

Some days the salon is bustling with students and clients coming in and out, leaving feeling refreshed and accomplished. Other days, this place is a ghost town. Only a handful of students show up, leaving the responsibility of their clients on the shoulders of the few who came to school that day. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind having a few extra clients, but some days it gets pretty crazy. Sometimes to the point where we don't hardly get any breaks between clients.

It Pays to be Certified

Over the last few weeks we have had the chance to take courses and earn certificates in various aspects of cosmetology. Being certified can easily add additional income just by knowing how to use the product correctly, on top of having the certification as a resume booster.

We started the D'Shaw Color Certification course and will be finishing that up early next week. That certification will allow me to use and purchase his professional only color line. Not only that, I've already… Continue

Gaining Confidence!

After graduating OR, I felt SO much anxiety about working with clients on the floor!  I was pretty much scared to death at the idea!  My first day out was personal service day for the nail class.  I was asked to cut one of the girls' hair.  I don't know what, or how it happened, but instead of being a nervous mess, I enthusiastically accepted the job and jumped right in!  I did really well!  I set aside any self doubt I…
